BMW gods of VADriven, I request thy advice
My current daily is a crewcab F250 King Ranch diesel. My main goal is to cut my fuel expenses but I don't want to sacrifice the creature comforts that my truck has, especially since I'm considering job offers that require commutes of 100 miles round trip. With that in mind, I started looking at used BMWs since they appear to double my current fuel mileage and I've wanted one for a long time. I've never really looked into them other than hearing that they are great cars to drive and parts are expensive. I'm finding a lot of 3 series sedans from 2005-2009 that seem to fit my basic criteria but I don't know anything about the different models or what to look for. Can someone give me some pointers on the basic differences between a 325, 328, 330, 335 and what an i or xi means? Anything else I need to take into consideration (such as reliability of specific parts) when looking at BMW's?
Cliffs:
Want a daily that gets better fuel economy than my 3/4 ton diesel pickup.
Has to be < $25k.
Don't want to give up heated leather, power accessories, etc.
Looking at used BMWs but need cheat sheet to figure out models and what to look for

I don't pretend to know the differences between all of the 3 Serires BMW's. All I can say is that you should look at Carmax when the time comes to buy one. My in-laws picked up two seperate models (330i and a Z4) from there last year and both have been top notch, and didn't break their bank either.

I believe the Xi means its AWD, not a 100% sure.
e46 m3's can be had in the 20's now, and are fantastic cars, not the greatest of gas mileage as it's premium gas, and a sports car.

Id go to a bmw dealership and look around, id find a car that has always been serviced at the dealership and has records of it.
It will save you many headaches.
