Get an B5 S4, but if you have to get an A4 you wont be able to do more than about 22psi (most chips put it to this level) for your boost on stock internals, any higher with the stock SMIC will show absolutely no gains. If it's quattro it will handle good, if not it will handle like a FWD car handles.
The 1.8t is a good little engine, but it is little and the K03 is tiny. You would have to do a lot, and spend a lot to make a B5 A4 fast.

To get 300whp you would have to spend more money than a B5 is probably worth. It's expensive to build an S4 if you don't do any of the work yourself, but that can be said for anything. Get an A6 with the 2.7T if you want easy power.
2.7T > 1.8T end of.

i love my b5 s4... but be prepared for tons of repairs and annoyances if you get one.
However they are rapidly coming down in price, just gotta find one that isnt to far beat up, but good luck.
