Question 2004 golf?

i want a lot of room, and efficiency would a volkswagen golf be good? i go to college so does anyone know how quiet the ride is on the interstate? and are they relatively problem free? (i know most maintenance will cost more and am milling to pay the extra)
anyone have stories of their golfs? the one i am looking at is a manual

2.0L 4cyl is the only reliable VW for those years. IMO.

2.0 is a dog. NO BALLS WHATSOEVER.

1.8 T is a pretty good motor, not really a whole lot of reliablitly issues, make sure if you get one with above 90K on it the timing belt has been changed.

VR6 is a pretty stout motor.

I've got an 04 R32 and i love it.

well it has 86k miles on it, so i'll probably have to get the timing belt and stuff done soon right? or should i expect it to have been done? i'm not too worried about being super fast, just want lots of room and good gas mileage haha but i heard the 1.8T is really "peppy" haha
do you guys think these are reliable cars? i looked at a 2002 jetta and everyone was saying that they were terrible cars haha

GLS model is a 2.0L, they are the BEST motor's vw ever made IMO. super reliable, slower than dog shit, but if you do run into an issue with it, they are INCREDIBLY easy to work on, and very easy to find parts for

1.8T is a good motor, but most of them have been beat on pretty good, if one is modified i'd shy away from it honesty, they are harder to get parts for, and a little more complicated to work on, def more expensive to maintain

VR6, i hate all of them, they are unreliable and expensive to maintain. i will say they sound amazing, and nothing else in the world sounds quite like it.

okay so since it's a GLS it's a 2.0L which would be good for a college student who just wants a reliable car and isn't concerned with being able to beat the random civic's that have fart cans? haha
