I believe it has a yearly limit also.

^ no sir. There's no odometer declaration on the application and the tags are permanent. You don't register ever again. Pay the $50 for tags and that's it. No yearly regs!

Clarification:
There is a mileage limit but there is no odometer declaration so there is no way to enforce it.

Welp, I'm getting them. And I should actually have a truck and trailer within the year to tow it all legit like.

Looks like if you're going to an event, the 250 mile trip limit doesn't apply. As I read it, the 250 miles is for "testing operation" and "occasional pleasure driving". From the DMV website:

Registering your vehicle either of these ways limits your use of the vehicle to:

- Participation in antique car club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, and similar events.
- Testing its operation, obtaining repairs or maintenance, selling the vehicle or trailer, transportation to and from events as described in number 1 above and for the occasional pleasure driving not to exceed 250 miles from your residence.
- Carrying or transporting passengers, personal effects or other antique motor vehicles being transported for show purposes.

That sort of depends how you read into it. I guess one could always plead ignorance or misconception but there's only so far that can get you. I was reading it the same way you were, events exempt, but who knows what cops think on the matter.

Really though, if you're at an event out of state, the cops aren't going to know VA law on antique plates anyway.

I guess the other obvious solution is to get the antique plate with the inspection requirement, and hit up good ol' SMOKEYBEAR, the illest, chilliest, fuck duh po-po, fight the power, broseph ever, for a sticker.

Does having antique plates effect your insurance?

No. But your car being old enough to have those plates also means it is eligible for a lot of collector car insurance plans, which are usually cheaper.
