Default 16-inch vs. 17-inch wheels

Here is my dilemma: Recently, I hit a pothole on a road on the closer to gloucester side of yorktown (bastards filled it in the next day so I couldn't get a picture). I was in traffic, the car in front of me hit it, and it took me by surprise. This pothole broke my front right 18" wheel (well, cracked it), and bent the rear right wheel, enough to where air leakes out slowly. My front left was already bent from hitting one of those wierd raised up mounds between pieces of road on the highway.

Because of this I am buying 4 new wheels, of a different brand. Should I go with 16"s, or 17"s though? I want something that looks great, yet wont bend or break like my 18"s did.

Please help!
Which should I buy?

What kind of car do you drive? 17s will amost always look better than 16s, unless you are rockin a hatch or something like that.

15 or 16 but if you were rocking 18's on a civic, I dont know what to tell you. Size does not determine if your rim is weak or not, cheap ones do. Rota is a good example of weak.

A 98 civic coupe is a long ways from being a torque monster. Before going for the 17's ask yourself do i want to feel like i'm towing something when i step on the gas? Not flaming you or trying to be a smart ass, i used to have a 98 civic coupe. i got some 17's for it and regretted it as soon as i stepped on the gas. Of course if you just want show it doesn't matter.

the main reason the wheels incurred injury, was that the tires were such a low profile, there was minimal tire flex to protect the wheel.

Out of 16-17, which one has the best overall: look and performance? (assuming this is a light-weight wheel, and the tires are the best available)

I would say 16, perfomance: Lighter wheel
Look: your car is not high up and fills the wheel well
But that is just my opinion, I think civic's with wheels bigger that 16 look stupid
