For those of you who don't know, I drive a 98 XJ converted from 2wd to 4wd. Unfortunatley along with 2wd, my XJ came with a 2.5 from the factory. The 4 angry squirrels won't be under my hood too much longer. Last fall I pulled a 97 4.0 from U-Wrench-It. Because I go to school in northern VA, I did not get many chances to work on the 4.0 over the winter and spring. I finally got the 4.0 all put back together, complete with new gaskets and various parts that needed replacing. Here is the 4.0 so far. I will keep yall updated on my progess. Eventually I will do a full writeup on this swap. Don't worry, I will take plenty of pictures! In the meantime, I need to figure out how to shift the aw4 that will be coupled to the 4.0. The aw4 I have is from a 96, which means the 97 ECU will not know how to "talk" to the 96 TCU. I am currently in the process of designing a tiptronic shifter for the aw4.

Sounds like a cool project, I got a friend thats building/built paddleshifters for his Volvo using a basic stamp and stuff, if you run into problems lemme know he could probably give you a hand. He found using the BS was the easiest way.

yes, please take lots of pics... i just picked up my '00 TJ with a 4 banger and this swap might be a possibility for me in the future... i was actually reading what seemed to be a good write up on the swap the other day... I'll see if i can find it again...

last week I took the old motor out and bolted the new motor and tranny up. As of now the entire engine control harness is hooked up. Here is my list of things to finish:
-bolt the trac-bar bracket back up
-re-time the motor
-hook the starter up
-get a new downpipe for the exhaust. (my current one comes up at too steep of an angle to properly fit on the end of the 4.0 header)
-new radiator
-hook up heavy duty tranny cooler
-shortern rear driveshaft

heres pics of the progress:

You know what impressed me a lot..... Pat's CJ-7 with a new 4.0L in it. I was really impressed at his skill with the swap. He did a good job imo. Good luck with the swap. I hope to be getting my CJ-7 back together one day after im done with my Talon. But definitly keep us posted.

Is the 96 computer the only one that will talk to that trans? I have a couple computers for the late model FI harness' laying around.

yeah, if I had a 96 computer it would be able to talk to the trans. Having the complete wiring harness from the 96 would be helpful too. If you located the correct wire though, you could run your own wires from the ECU to the TCU.
