well, ive already discussed this with soulD. he told me i should post it here. there are a lot of people nowadays looking to get pictures of their cars taken. i think it would be a good idea if we did something sort of like what honda-tech has with their h-tphotocrew (reference: http://www.h-tphotocrew.com/ ). it would be a good way for users to get good quality photos of their cars done by the photographers of dragva, and also a place to display them. i have lots of ideas as to how to get this going and how to get it to work, all i need is admin/user support. leave comments and feedback. thanks.
You know I'm down bro and I'm sure many others are too. I think there should be a certain criteria you have to meet though. I'm not trying to sound like an asshole, but I don't think there should be guys that take excellent quality pics and someone that takes shitty pics. I believe we should vote or something on who should be part of the "crew" persay. Just my .02. I'm definitely down. Lets get something going guys.
nothing.

I really think this is a good idea and also a good opportunity for some people that wouldn't usually have the chance to have good pics of their car taken.
I'm inbetween cameras right now, but once I decide on what I want I'll be more than happy to help if the people think my photographs are worthy of the "crew"
Let's get this rolling. Even if I'm not one of the "crew" I'd still love to see the work some people do.

I personally like this idea: it lets local owners show off their cars and lets you damn photo nazis show off your skills.
Seeing how everyone else feels about the idea is the first step.
Next step would be to integrate this idea into dragVA.
Then, we pick the photographers, pick the cars, and get at it.
I see a "downloads" section coming from this, with wallpapers and the like.

well pat, what else is it going to take to get this going?
It's a good idea so the question of if it is going to be done isn't really an issue.
What exactly needs to be done though?
Or do you really have no idea and are looking for suggestions :)

How about just two or three forums
One for posting the finished pictures only
One for requests only
Or make one for general comments and requests, and make the person type "Request-Vehicle-Date" if its a request
I just think it'd be good if everything was uniform. Not just "heres johns civic" or "the best car evaR!" etc
In the actual picture posting forum you could do "Car-Date-Username-Photographer"
And then they can have a photograph of the month or something.. nicest picture of the nicest car that month voted for by users
I dont know, I'm not a part of it no clue what they have planned
I for one am completely open to suggestions because I don't really know what should be done or how it should be done. Leigh ran it across me last night and there are a few local and non local people on this board that I can think of that take awesome pictures.
How about just two or three forums Yuck.
I doubt it will come to that.

well, you guys already have most of it planned out i suppose. my only other addition to that would be to make a sub-section of the main site to post the pictures on, and create either another forum for the pictures, or just make a sub-forum of eye candy for it. i mean, i was hoping for something a little more structured than just adding a forum, but if thats what you wanna do, its your choice. i REALLY like the way h-t has their photocrew site set up. it doesnt have to be anywhere nearly as elaborate as that, but i personally would like to see a little more attention brought to it than just your everyday forum.
as far as picking the photographers goes, your idea sounds good. no problems with that.
the only thing id like to see, like i said, is a more structured, fun to look at portion of the main page with everything neatly laid out, with possibly the photographer's information, camera equipment, etc., as if it were a portfolio of sorts. if you dont know what i mean, just tell me, and ill elaborate more. but if you wanna get this going, go right on ahead.
thanks for giving it the attention it deserves.
i mean, i was hoping for something a little more structured than just adding a forum I don't really want to add another forum, but that will be the easiest/quickest route. Unless someone else wants to create a website another (single) forum is most likely what will be used.

in response to your sig. the new rebel xt. there are soo many problems with $80 dollar battery that comes with the D70. ive taken shots AND printed them with the rebel300d/nikond70/canon20d and the canon pics loook waay better than then d70. under the auto mode, the canons seem to focus alot better than the d70. At 55mm, objects are as crisp as if they were shot at 28mm with the canons. At 35mm, objects start to blur and come out of focus.
id vote for a Photography/car pics only forum.

vw vortex has an excellant picture forum. It's not at all what you guys are looking at doing, but more of a "High Quality Eye-Candy" type deal. I despise going into our Eye-candy forum and seeing a ton of low quality videos and links to ebay. I'd like to see a small forum dedicated to the amazing work these fellas turn out.

I like the idea of creating a forum strictly for car pictures...especially since eye-candy seems to have turned into a forum of links and public PM's of inside jokes.
I also think it'd be a nice feature to have the 'photocrew' feature be a link off the dragva home page to a page dedicated to pictures of cars taken by those nominated, along with maybe a little background on the photographer and his gear.

Since I was directed here, I don't like the idea that "only members of the club can post". I think if someone joins DragVA who enjoys taking nice pictures, they should be able to post them. Maybe have sub-forums within this Picture Forum like... "Nature/Scenery", "Automobiles", "Bikes", "Homes", "Animals"... etc.

The entire point of this thing is for quality photographers to take quality pictures of quality cars.
If someone wants to take pictures of random emo-faggy shit, they can just throw that shit up in eye candy. This is a car site, after all.
Allowing only approved members to create threads in the newly-created section is the entire point of having the section to begin with. It's supposed to be quality over quantity. If I wanted to see 50 million threads with shitty pictures in them, I can look in eye candy for that since there are plenty already.

Roger.
I think this is an absolutely awesome idea.
Here's my idea on how it should be:
~A seperate forum for the quality photographers with quality cars
~Only people from the 'photo crew' can create new threads
~If some fucktard from the 'photo crew' abuses it, they're out
~Anyone can reply to the threads and ask about the setting, locations, etc...
~If someone wants to be in the 'photo crew' just have them post up some pics in eye-candy, and if they don't suck, let him/her in
~Incorporate in the rules to keep the retarded inside jokes out of the forum
~Let the images be available to download for wallpapers with the DragVa logo on it (like DTMPower)
~If you want your car photographed, PM one of the 'photo crew' and if they can't do it, they'll know someone who has time
~Don't make it a private forum (i.e. let guests be able to view it, but only members can download from it)
This is only going to be sucessful in you put up very specific rules and enforce them. (The later shouldn't be a problem) For some fucking reason, people on this site are fucking uncontrolable when you don't set up rules that cover all of the bases.
This is coming at a perfect time though. We already have quite a few really good photographers (ritz, nothing, Soon2BeStangin, etc...). And there are going to be quite a few cars coming out of this site in the next few months that will give them something to take pictures of. Add that to the rest of the quality cars on here already and the photographers can pretty much choose who they want. I'm with SoulD with the need for quality pics of quality cars. Everyone thinks of this site as a bunch of 16 year old ricers with civics and fart cans, we need to show everyone that we are a maturing board with quality cars and good people. In the last few month, everyone has started to kick it up a few notches car-wise, and this would be a perfect place for them to show them off. (Or you can be like Jay and take three years, whatever) I thing it's pretty badass when I go to the NOVA DragVA meet and 300 cars show up and Drag is regularly mentioned on Bimmerforums, DTMPower, E46fanatics, etc.... (the other forums I go to) I still consider this a local 757 board and it's a trip that it's started to get the reckonition it deserves.
You can call me an idiot if you want, but those are my opinions. :)

Or maybe something like having the pictures and comments occupy seperate threads (with the comment thread viewable/postable only to drag members).
That way, if the comments get too out of hand, they won't detract from the original thread.
The focus will be the pictures, not everything afterwards.

I enjoy looking at the quality pictures from some of the guys on this site. From that perspective, my suggestions for the new forum would be:
1.) The ability to start threads limited to the people chosen to take photos.
2.) The first post in the thread should have some brief info about the photographer, equipment, location and car/owner.
3.) The picture thread should then be locked and a link provded where comments can be posted. That way it is easy to keep track of where the comments go and easier for newbies to bring back old threads. :D This will also limit the number of thread that need to be moderated.
Just some thoughts from the peanut gallery. Thanks.

for this sub-photography forum, look at other photo forums online and see how they set it up.
Car thread (car 'photoshoot')
all of dragva can view and *post
Critique thread(ANY type of comments allowed)
dragva can view but only photocrew allowed to post.
etc thread (soon to be stangin for example, flower series, norfolk at night etc)
dragva can view and *post
threads will only have pics taken by people who actually know who to use their camera. like pics of cars that look like some ad for auto trader or ebay shall be kept in eyecandy.
thread titles will actually be the title of the series or project (ex. Norfolk at Night and not "few pics from day", "nice shots of my car". etc
the maximum shots that are posted by the postee should only be 5. so itll be up to the postee, to find the BEST 5 shots of the series and not all 13 of em.
*posting --anyone should be allowed to post/reply/comment(good or bad)/ask questions. but not suggest. the shots were taken by a photographer with his/her own intentions.
no low blows are allowed when posting about the pics. the replies should be your opinion on what you think of the pics or what the photographer was trying to accomplish and not in a sacrcasm way.
of course there are gonna be alot of admirers(sp?). they would post their series in eyecandy and if the moderator sees the photo thread is acceptable, he can move the thread to the Photo forum.
thats all i could think of now. and what i had to go through in school.

I like the idea that registered users can post in those threads.
I don't like the idea of creating a thread with the pictures, then a link for comments...to me that sounds like the "Featured Ride" section.
I would also suggest a well developed set of rules and strict moderation of them.
I would also suggest that "entry" into the 'photocrew' never be closed, because what if one day someone else figures out how to take good pictures, or someone who can take good pictures registers?

I'm gonna buy the 300D and save the extra 200 and drop it on a decent lens. dpreview has a review of the XT and I glanced at the samples and they are no better than the 300D. Hell maybe it's me, but the samples from the 300d look better than the xt.
funny thing is you are right. i have used and taken shots from the rebel and the 20D and the Rebel produced a better shot when it was printed. if you dont like the gray plastic feel of the rebel, then go and get the 20D, but you are basically getting the same exact camera.
i have the samples if anyone wanted to look at them.
Hey, I'd like to get in on this too.
I'm only in 757 during the summer because of school at VT, but there's cars out here too haha.
I've got samples of my photography if there's going to be a "standard" to be part of the photo crew.

now buy some CF ultra cards, tripod, uv filter, at least a 70-300mm lens. those will at least optimize the use of the rebel.
most common mistake when changing the lens on SLR's, is that people dont change the lens with the body facing down, which doesnt allow any dust to enter into the body.

Full size version (http://img2.dpreview.com/gallery/canoneos20d_samples/originals/img_2169.jpg)
IMO the XT shot looks a little cleaner and since it has a 8MP CMOS sensor vs. the 300D's 6MP sensor I might drop the extra money and go with the XT (over the 300D). Everything I've read about it has been good and It's still over $500 less than a 20D.
Summary of changes (compared to the EOS 300D / Digital Rebel)
* Eight megapixel CMOS sensor (not same as EOS 20D)
* Second generation CMOS (same generation as rest of current range)
* DIGIC II image processor (better image quality, faster processing, less power consumption)
* Instant power-on time, faster shutter release, shorter blackout time
* Continuous shooting speed increased (3.0 fps vs. 2.5 fps)
* Buffer increased (14 JPEG frames vs. 4 JPEG frames)
* Image processing time decreased (thanks to DIGIC II)
* Compact Flash write speed increased
* Smaller body (15 x 5 x 8 mm smaller)
* Lighter weight (17% lighter including battery)
* Matte plastic finish, standard body color to be black, sliver will also be available
* Re-designed control layout (drive mode button, new metering mode & AF buttons)
* Metal mode dial
* Harder rubber finish on hand grip (doesn't feel much like rubber)
* Smaller and lighter NB-2LH battery (same as PowerShot S60 / S70) which is 48% lighter
* Rear LCD panel changed
* Flash pop-up slightly higher (just 5 mm)
* E-TTL II flash
* Nine custom functions
o Customizable SET button
o Control noise reduction
o Flash sync speed in Av mode
o Shutter button / AE button
o AF-assist beam control
o Selectable 0.3 or 0.5 EV exposure steps
o Mirror lock-up
o E-TTL II mode
o Flash shutter curtain sync (1st or 2nd)
* Selectable Metering mode
* Selectable AF mode
* Flash exposure compensation
* Independently selectable color space
* Two preset and three custom image parameter sets, B&W mode (same as EOS 20D)
* White balance fine tuning and bracketing (improved)
* Proper RAW+JPEG (one RAW, one JPEG; although only Large/Fine)
* Record review histogram via Info button
* Play Jump mode by shot date, 10 or 100 images
* USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connection
* New BG-E3 battery grip (portrait controls), takes two NB-2LH or six AA batteries
* Two additional menu languages added; Korean and Russian
* Subtly re-designed kit lens now named the EF-S 18 - 55 mm II (still no USM)
* Software now includes ZoomBrowser, DPP and EOS Capture
* Lower initial list price

Trust me. I've done my research because I wasn't down for paying $300 more on a camera that's the same at it's counterpart, but there are differences. Yes some shots may look the same, but hell that can be said for anything. I've seen shots from my G6 that look better than a 300D and shots from a 300D that look better than a 20D, but if you use each camera to it's full potential then the XT will come out on top.
Another thing is this. Canon wouldn't release another camera in it's rebel line that's equal the one the one they already have. They'd lose money because people would realize "Hey this camera that I paid $1K for takes pictures just like the camera my friend paid $700 for." Like I said there isn't going to be a huge difference. You have to think of price. They aren't going to make the XT blow the 300D completely out of the water for only $300 more. That's what the 20D is for then you have the 1D MkII.
I'm not trying to start an argument I'm just trying to speak facts. Canon would not release a camera that isn't going to be better than the previous model that it's replacing. If that happened then within minutes word would be spread across the internet and probably thousands of potential XT buyers would say "Hey I'm gonna save my money by not buying an XT and just get a 300D", so Canon would lose money by having a brand new camera that isn't selling worth a shit.
Just my 2 pennies.

just remember, i aint the only one who "criticized" a photo. fuck, most of the time they learned something. who knew about white balance and how it really determines the quality of the picture. why not learn. itd be shit if you werent trying to learn anything else in your life.
back on page 10 when joe and company where talking bout who has what camera at home etc, i put my comment in there. i hope no one took me seriously. "ill make you all cry", yeah i was talking shit foreals,,, [roll the eyes]
a degree IS more than a piece of paper for those who did graduate from something. if it took someone 2 or 4 years or even their whole lifetime to walk across a stage, i def wouldnt give em shit,,,id congrat them. someone please quote me on when i said i was special or that i have more talent that exceeds anyone?
the only way this shit would get out of hand is when people contribute to it in a and b fashion. im guesing those would be your two cents?
And yeah you are right, there is noone on here TO determine what are the best pics. But people do have an eye for the camera and understand the concept of photography and when they comment on other peoples photos, those people should take note on how they could make their pics better.
And with that degree, i did learn something called typography. 90% of the people out there just type away hit return and end it with a period. Little do they know they have to understand the language of characters and their relation to the space around it. So when someone does show me some work and they dont get 100% positive comments, they arent supposed to cry and call themselves anti-photo or anti design nazi. Only those who been in critiques know that more than words are thrown at your work.
Aint no damn time in my book or no one elses to put up or shut up. But it was worth a try to get something going on with the people who had cameras and understood photography.

There wasn't all that many submissions. So what I'm going to do is let the people that submitted choose. If you sent me your pictures look for a email from me in the next day or two with the details.
the .zip file or attachment didn't work for me otherwise i would submitted something.
Well I think maybe 75% of the people have voted. Not really sure how long to give the people who haven't sent me anything back. One more week or have they been given enough time?
I think they've been given enough time.

I have about 25 pics to put up out of ~70 tonight when I get home. It wasn't too bad, nothing worth stressing because you missed it. I got my 50mm f1.8 today before the show, so it was fun.

I'm not going to take the time to make a seperate thread about this...
I need suggestions on a good, solid, heavy, tripod. The one I've been useing is too lightweight and it wobbles and moves every fucking time I try to snap a shot off. I took 200+ night pictures the other night and not a fucking single one of them came out worth posting because everything has a blurred edge or double image.
If anyone has found one they really like just shoot me the model number and where you bought it and possibly the price if you remember, I'd appreciate it.
nothing.

Why not use the built in timer or get a remote?
I know that's to easy but I never liked having to carry a heavy tripod around. My lightweight tripod + remote always worked perfect.

Same thing with everything in life goes with tripods. You get what you pay for.
My parents paid $50 for a tripod for my birthday last year. I like it but overtime it's starting to work it's way lose.
I just use my built in timer now and it works a lot better than dropping $150+ on a tripod. Atleast for right now.

I'm thinking I need to start being more liberal with my timer. I have hated using it in the past, but it seems the most logical way.
I am using a Digital Rebel btw. Thanks for everyone's input.
Yeah Kevin try that out. I never used my built in timer on any of the cameras I had, but I noticed that it posed a problem when I was shooting at say ~1 second shutter because by the time I got my hand off the picture snapped off and looked like crap.
All of the shots in "Shawn's SRT-4" thread were taken using my timer.

Since I dont have the camera infront of me...is there a way to set the amount of time for the timer? Like bring it down to 2-3 seconds instead of whatever the default 10-15seconds is? It would be uber annoying if I had to wait for the long ass timer each time. Camera is stuck at work, so lend a brotha a hand.
