i planned on trying to get a bike later on this summer, most likely was going to look into a 600, however, my boss is offering to sell me his 99 ninja250 with 4000 on it for like a grand. only thing, is im almost 6ft and i weigh 200 lbs, i dont give a fuck about how funny id look riding this shit, but would it even be worth buying in any terms of learning how to handle a bike at speeds and shit? sorry, im not a big bike guy :D

and dont get the 250. you have to factor in all the gear you gotta get, insurance, license, registry... all for a bike your gonna get tired of. personally, i think the 250s look whack.

It might be but I got a quote for a 04 r1 $388 a year.

If you just want to get the feel for a bike I sure it would be fine. Once you get used to it you will won't something bigger. I would go for the 600. Some of my friends just got bikes and they got 600s. They have never road before and are doing fine.

I feel ya dude. I talked with Del La Sol before even starting towards my full dedication to getting a bike. Del said that i should be straight with a 600. Just dont get anything over it for a first bike. And try to keep level headed about the entire thing (ie. dont go tryin to do stupid shit right after you just start learning).

I think with your height and weight, riding on a 250 would be quite akward, but ive been told on cycleforums.com in the noob section that its better to learn how to ride on two wheels first, and after getting used to that, go and get a 600. If you are in the same position i am, money IS an object/problem, so you want to spend it wisely so you dont end up wanting to spend again soon after. If you get the 250, your out a G, and gear alone for me came to 550 (excluding boots and pants). The 250's are small and i dont see any that look that good at all. If you want one, then get it. And if you havent signed up for your class yet, i wouldnt even bother getting the bike or the gear.

considering the price i'd buy it... learn the very basics on it, and if you get tired of it or want something else you'll be able to sell it for a profit it probably 2 days in the trading post at max... there is a huge demand for 250's so selling them won't be a problem, just use it to learn then sell it and make some money for a new bike... i bought my ex a 250 and thing was so fun to ride, slide it around all over the place and shit like its a dirt bike, actually i took it off road alot haha

Wow, am i really!?!? Well, im glad i am. I didnt get into my class early as i hoped, now i have to wait until April 23-25 for my official class, and it sucks, but since i dont have a bike yet, its just more time i have to save for one, so its all good in the end. I cant wait to start riding and get out with you guys. Bike guys are a lot nicer than any of these car guys have been on drag. :thup:

It's easier to learn how to ride fast on a slow bike...that may not make much sense to you now, but it will after you've been riding a while. In the long run you're much better off starting on a small bike and working your way up. The 250 Ninja isn't a bad bike, but for a grand I'd look for a Suzuki GS500 or a Ninja 500. I bought a GS500 as a starter bike years ago and never got rid of it. Check out the message board at www.gstwin.com and you'll find a few bikes for sale in your price range and a large, knowledgable group of riders that will be happy to give you info about the bike.

Regardless of what you decide to do about the 250, I wouldn't go any larger than a 600 for a first bike - and even some of the newer 600s can be a handful for an inexperienced rider. Good luck.

I learned on a 250 and tought a few of my friends too. Del is right, they are fun to keep around later just to play around on too. I really suggest a 250 for your first bike cause any 600 other than a katana can be squirlly with somone who has no experience.

A brand new 04 Ninja EX250 costs 3000. So getting a 99 for 1000 could be a good deal; but that depends on the condition of the bike.

My girl just bought an 03 ninja 250 and I think it's a great little bike. I've ridden it a few times. I was very impressed. From riding my F4 for the last two years I didn't think a little 250 would do anything for me......but it was like riding a dirtbike on the street! It's great! And it'll be going with me for every track day this season so I have something to ride down the pits!

But..........................I've met you and I'm not sure you'll be satisfied with the 250. You could outgrow it pretty quick. A Katana 600 or GS500 might be more what you're looking for.

My advice would be to start at least sitting on some friends bikes and see what you feel most comfortable on. And then decide what size would keep your interest the longest.
