my dad was aways into cars/motorcycles and he'd spend hours in his garage tinkering with stuff and trying to teach me and my brother about how things work. I doubt any of it sank in but I guess all that time in the garage just rubbed off.

I bought my first MR2 in Cali, it was a Mk1 and I payed six hundred dollars for it. I was hooked instantly. Its still the most fun car, out off all the ones I have owned. Unfortunately it got run over buy a dumb ass in a brand new Dodge truck while it sat in the parking lot at work back in 2002. I took the money I got to fix it and bought a MK2.

the story:
there was an is-f that was so fast that it traveled backwards in time to when i was 14. it drove past me and the driver had mad sluts all up in his car and was super fucking baller.
this experience inspired me to become baller and shit, but the is-f wouldn't be invented for another 8 years so i settled for a wrx and started modifying it.

Eh. My HS always had modified civics, integras, mustangs, etc etc. I got to ride in a hype-R and I was hooked.
Started off with a 240, and my obsession grew from there.
Then like zelle said, it's the never ending quest to be different, just like everyone else.

I bought a 240 before all the hype and started ricing it out (painting the interior pieces and shit). then i blew my motor so i got an SR. I think MA-HALF-E egged me on more than anything, cause he didn't believe me that I had it.

As a kid, I believe I was 8, I went to the street races for the first time back in Puerto Rico. That's back when a 13 second street car was super fast. Nothing but old Toyota Corollas, Starlets, Mazdas RX-3, RX-4's, RX-7's, Datsuns, Mustangs, etc. The biggest battle in PR was rotors vs. pistons. That really got me hooked. It was like this adrenaline rush I got from watching the races, that when I started driving, I would go street racing; that was the fix to my addiction.
My cousin introduced me to the "Honda" or FWD scene. That's when I learn all about mods. When it was time for me to get my first car, it was all about modding and racing. Now, things have changed, now it's just a hobbie, I have different priorities in life. But I keep up with the "scene".

Hard to say... as a young man my father was extremely into cars. He had an 11 second Olds 442 in highschool and was always drag racing. After selling his '74 Corvette in '76 he didn't have anything sporty other than a '78 318 bimmer for a long time. I came along in '81.
Growing up my father rarely talked about cars, never owned a sportscar, and never went to the races. I do remember being 4 or 5 and shifting the gears in that little Bimmer from the passenger seat though.
When I was a teen I would obsess about what kind of car I was going to try and get and what was my "favorite" car. I had decided I wanted a truck as that's what my father had... an F-150.
Long story short my first car ended up being a '95 Ford Probe GT 6-spd... we were at the dealer looking at Rangers (parent's didn't want me to have an F-150 as my first car) and the car came in on trade... it was laser red w/ chrome wheels and a very nice looking car.
Ever since then I was hooked... my only mod to the Ford was a set of projector fogs, but it was still the first thing I did myself. I learned how to do fluid changes and learned how to polish and wax that car for the first time.
My interest in cars has completely rekindled my father's interest in them and now it's a passion we both share.

What got me hooked on sports cars was my first ever ride in a viper at 15. He did the biggest burnout followed by a pull through 3rd gear.
Def. my uncles 95 yellow corvette with a 383 stroker, lingenfelter heads/cam and a vortech supercharger is the car that made me want to start modding. Damn that bitch is fast.

I got into the car scene when I was in Middle School(00'ish) with my best friend at that time buying super street mags every month from 7-11 and dreaming to be on the cover. Got my 1st project that was a crx when I was a freshman in high school for $2500 from saving lunch/work money and never did anything to it. Also my brothers had a 87 Crx si and a 95 civic si hb.

I agree... most people who still have them try to do horrid things with them.
They never made a 6 speed Probe.
Did I say 6-speed? I meant 5-speed. I'm used to typing 6-speed from the Corvette thing.
Uncle was into drag racing. Took my dad and myself to the track a couple times when i was like 13 and i was hooked every since. Even though he has totally different cars (69 Roadruuner and a Dart) my 1st car was a 89 CRX that i got for 600 bucks. Ended up selling it for 4g's when i got done with it. :)

I use to see civics with bodykits, huge spoilers, and loud exhausts. I remember envying them at sight. It wasn't until the F&F series came out and when I started learning more about cars when I began to realize how stupid those things were. But I have yet to meet a person who didn't have a rough start to modifying cars.

I can't really remember what hooked me... I remember I was crazy into it before I even owned a car. I always loved speed ect so I'm sure that and freinds with moded cars got me hooked. Bought my first car, a 1988 Honda CRX Si w/ 64,000 original miles on it in 2000. I ended up being the typical hot headed 16 year old with some decent sized balls/ common sense and pushed myself to learn how to drive the shit out of an automobile. Been in it ever since.

Several things influenced me. Sadly I didn't grow up around anyone that had or was into fast cars.
Gran Turismo - One of the first games I actually bought, I saved my lunch money and money for chores to buy it, lol. I fell in love with the Rally courses and the 22B became my favorite car. I was sick in that game with it.
HS - When I was in HS there were only a handful of modded cars. Dougy (sp) Seymor had the most modded out Accord at the time. He had nice 5 star wheels, dropped, exhaust, and some chinese letters across the fender and hood. LOL, totally rice by todays standards, but this was like 10 years ago. After seeing his car I told myself I'd eventually have a nice car.
My first few cars were:
89 Mercury Topaz
86 Honda Civic
83 Honda Accord
They all sucked, but I had a decent system in each one (picked up a system super cheap back in HS, made it better over the years).
I just couldn't afford a nicer car at the time, much less the money to mod one.
Finally a few years after HS and having gotten my shit together I finally got my first OK car... a 99 Eclipse RS, lol. I put 18s and a CAI on it within 6 months of buying it, but decided I wasn't going to go all out modding it since it wasn't really the platform I wanted to start with (I really wanted a GSX). So I kept the car and used it to build my credit.
Finally at 25 I bought my STi, which I was dying to have for a year before getting it. I told myself that I WOULD have a STi no matter what, and I'd do whatever it took to get one. I spent an entire year working my ass off and saving up money to buy it. My tranny started slipping in the Eclipse about 2 months before I was ready to buy the STi, so I ended up getting it a little earlier than I had wanted to.
Now that I have the car I want, I'll be modding this one quite a bit. I don't plan to sell the car at all, and will rebuild it when the engine goes, so there's no telling how far I'll be modding this one. Oddly I had almost forgotten my love for the 22B and Gran Turismo until after I bought my STi and started thinking about GT one day.
I will admit that F&F did motivate me to want to get into modding more. Really the only reason I waited so long was cause I was too poor to mod. If I had had the money and/or a decent car to mod I would have been modding since HS.
EDIT: The first thing that convinced me to get something fast...
My friend had a 00 Mustang (v6) and I had a 99 Eclipse RS at the time. We used to play around cause our cars were a pretty close match at the time. About a year later he got a 96 Cobra. After him giving me a 5 second head start and walking the fuck out of me like I was in reverse, I vowed to myself that I'd have something that fast one day. Sadly we're no longer friends and he has no clue I have the STi now.

my dad had motorcycles and nice cars back when i was little, also my uncle let me drive his honda when i was like 5 in a field and i loved it. my dad also told me stories of how he took my grandma's 57 belair and street raced and had a bug and drag raced it at the track and it did wheelies and crap.. that all got me into it, but i've always loved cars, when i was little i used to tell my parents i wanted to grow up and change oil in cars for a living lol...

I was around 13 years old when I got into modifying cars. I used to go out on the weekends with my friend's older brother who had a civic hatch. We would pile up in other people's cars and go out to the street races back when people had walkie talkies and CB radios to get away from the cops.
I started out with a 94 Ford Probe GT, and then got into Hondas. I worked at Kimnach ford when I was 17-19 and I drove my first 03-04 cobra that was modified. It scared the shit out of me, and was so powerful that I got into Domestics/RWD.

My dads best friend babysat me when I was a wee lad (sub 5 years old), and he used to read me out of a car book, and I knew all the parts of a motor and such by sight. He built (and still builds) drag cars, and they had a low 8 second all motor vega (i mean, in 1988, that shit was stupid fast). Anyway, that stuck me with liking muscle cars. And as I got older, I started liking all cars.

two things got me into cars
1. When i was about 12, i was in the car with my parents driving on 95 south. We were sitting there, bored as shit waiting to get to the exit, when i see this integra come up behind us, going about 90-100, weaving in and out of traffic. When it passed us, i thought that it was the coolest thing in the world.
2. Fast and da Furious, duh

Then rode in my friends stock braked 70 mustang, and was scared shitless trying to stop from a race...

Um. Well.
My father/brother/grandfather/uncles/stepfather/mom drove modified or cool cars all the time.
I've always been the type to tear it apart and work on it. VCRs, Radios, RC cars, Dirtbikes, Lawnmowers, Powerwheels etc etc.
Got a car. Did simple things, cleaned it, changed the oil, learn to 'push' it. Bought a 'built' Supra motor off a local supra forum and started to piece together my first turbo kit for my supra.
Sold the supra due to me being a idiot(no tickets or wrecks). Bought a Civic for more practicalilty(sp?). Painted it. Wheels. did little motor mods to the b16a2. And I've been hooked ever since.
Really, the quest for me was to be faster. I don't care what I own, I want it to be fast. Bikes, dirtbikes, boats, rc cars etc.

My uncle used to race at Langley. He would tell me stories about it all the time. He would tell me what they did to the car but at that age I had no fucking clue what he was talking about. Sounded pretty badass though. My mother also had a 71 Vette with a 454. She used to tell me about how she would streetrace when she was young. I guess I just fell into it.
My first car was some old red 86 VW jetta. It had some ugly chrome 5 spoke rims, a wing, and a loud ass exhaust. Back then it was hot shit.
Since then, I have found a love for rotary motors. My side project is an 87 RX7 T-II. I would like to get into the road racing scene, or at least some autocross.
And of course F&F and GT. That game was the shit. There was some GTO or FTO twin turbo in that game. I wanted until i found out they didn't exist. LAWLZ!

Helping my father build Motors in the garage..or watching him do it when i was young...He has 2 all motor
V8's drag cars...and whats ironic about that, is im ALL ABOUT BOOST......I think my next car will be a V8 and guess what....it WILL be Boosted (turbocharged that is...) The girls aspect never got to me due to the fact that i couldnt give a rats ass about some teeny bopper girls all over me for my ride....I used other methods to get females attention...;)
oh yea, and Fast and Furious can go to HELL for destroying that perfectly good RS eclipse...lol

I delivered tofu every morning. Slowly I got better and better. I managed to beat everyone that wanted to race me and eventually someone wanted me to join their team. I joined and I learned a lot more, like the one-handed steering, but my dad taught me the most. Every morning he would put water in a cup and put it in the cupholder. I was supposed to drift with the cup in the car. It was really hard but once I started to get the water swirling it got easier.
Well, growing up I always thought sports cars were "cool" but the only ones I ever recognized were corvettes and mustangs. Then when I was in high school I was looking into getting my first car which was going to be an automatic, but then....uh, Gone in 60 Seconds came out and it was all over. lol. That scene towards the end when Nicholas Cage is driving the Shelby GT 500 thru the city and they showed all the shifting and braking with the right foot while taking out the clutch with the left, is what made me get a 5-speed car. And that was that.

My uncle has been racing dirt track since way before I was born...used to go watch him every Saturday from when I was a baby to probably 10-11 years old. I actually learned my numbers and colors from the racecars...I would point at the ones I liked and my mom would tell me what color and number it was...I loved the pink car with the sparkly number 4...GO FIGURE. It just evolved from there, I collected hot wheels and would literally cry and throw a temper tantrum if the McDonalds people tried to give me the girl happy meal with the Barbie instead of the boy's meal with the hot wheels. My mom and dad have also always been into cars...my mom used to sell and buy cars more often than me. She had a super sweet trans-am with the bird on the hood when I was born, Lumina z-34 (when they were brand new), bmw 325, acura integra....
People that I started hanging out with right before I could drive were into modifying Hondas, when my parents asked what I wanted for my first car I asked for an 89 Honda Prelude. Got it, and here I am.:)

I have no idea. I've always liked pretty much anything with an engine. I raced snowmobiles, dirtbikes, watercraft, etc etc. I like going fast.
My first "nice" car was a Honda. Since I like going fast, the only option was modifying.

I think hot wheels and matchbox cars are what got me into cars, plus the fact that my dad pretty much shoved me into helping him work on his old Fiero. And just before I was old enough to drive F&F came out then the NFS Underground games, pretty much sealed my fate from there.

Well my dad was always against me modding cars and driving something fast because he got into trouble all the time when he was younger with fast cars. Well luckly for me my cousin and uncle where very much into fast cars and I was very close to them. They would always make me help them fix things on cars before I could drive even though I wasn't really interested. I enjoyed the idea of owning a fast car from driving my cuzin and uncles cars. Well it wasnt tell I got my first car (93 Probe GT) that I got interested in working on my own car. Then I got a 98 Mustang GT that I really got interested in learning how to do things myself. Luckly for me I was never in the rice era. Then when I came into the navy I got a 2003 Sentra Spec-v and started getting into imports... Now I own a Civic and really enjoy imports... But I still want a 02 FireHawk

my dad really didn't play a big part in me getting into the modding scene. he knows some basic stuff but that's bout it. I would have to say when I purchased my first harley I really got into working on cars and stuff. modding was a different story. didn't get into that until highschool. hung out with all my buddies souping up their hondas and domestics. now I own my own import and am holding off doing anything performance wise until I get a dd that is reliable. that is my story

My oldest brother fixed cars. The next brother raced cars. The next brother played Gran Turismo and I never saw how the game was fun. Then friends kept on calling imports ricers and I didn't know what the fuck they were talking about, I thought they were saying Chrysler's. As I was trying to point out, "No it wasn't." Then I saw the light. PS2 was Gran Turismo and now with the 360 its Forza.
I am proud to say i got in to it a year before FF came out. I am sad to say i had to start out with a 95 Hyundai Accent since it was all i could afford. First it was a Macco paint job, then i started researching more and more and it grew from there to intake , lowering, a WEAPON R 3" muffler that i thought was the shit back in 2000 and so on.
Then i was stupid enough to get in to Automotive field and after that is when it all just went downhill, cant wait to get out and only play with my car rather then fix other peoples shitboxes.
Take my advice, never mix hobby with work!
I guess as others said its a quest about becoming unique and getting more out of the car then it has to offer from factory.

I'll admit it. The Fast and the Furious. It just so happen to be the same time i was getting a car, and the whole street racing scene was still around.

My dad doesn't believe in paying anyone to do work he can figure out so I got a pretty good base knowledge from him fixing our cars.
Add in the fact that I can be really competitive and it just evolved into an obsession that will always be a part of me.
