Yeah, it the go ahead from the city, but as of right now they are looking for the $$$. It would be a dream come true, but it's doubtfull that it will happen.
Plenty of enthusiasts in the area to keep them rich though!

They built a very nice in-road, and started moving some earth around. Then the residents bitched. Three years later, they finally have approval....and ran out of money in the litigation process.
I am very good friends with someone who was on their board of directors - he hasn't heard anything in about a year the last time we talked about it.
i.e - dead.

If they opened up registration for the club and charged a small fee, they could probably make quite a bit of money to finish this. Thats one of the main reasons I bought a truck, because there is nothing really close enough for me to take a sports car to go race. I'd contibute what if the fee is reasonable.

When I was the autocross chairman with the Old Dominion Region SCCA, we were kept in the loop pretty sell, since SCCA-ODR would have the SCCA sanction for races.
The last I heard, which could have been loaded with "spin" was the county wanted significant improvements in the infrastructure. Roads, plumbing, drainage etc. "Supposedly" there is a subdivision going in somewhere down the road from the track, which also has to make those improvements. So I understand, the track developers are waiting for them to do the improvements, thus saving money. I have also heard there is clearing done and even rumors of pavement in some places, but I can't confirm that. All one has to do is look at VIR or Summit Point and see how popular thay are. I think it would be a good deal for the county, but of course, you have the "not in my back yard" assholes. To a point I understand their situation too. Have y'all heard all the shit Shenandoah Speedway near Charlottesville has had to put up with?
The long and short of it i sthat it would be absolutely awesome. Especially if it can be done as planned. Basically a membership track, where you buy rights to use it. Hell, build that thing, I'll be there!

There is a paved acces road and thats it, as far as anyone knows nothing else has been done. Most likely nothing else is EVER going to be done.
Read the whole thread, basically New Kent county and it's residents freaked out because they thought this was going to be some sorta NASCAR track and fought it's development.

I've been following this closely for awhile and one of the comments a public meeting by one of the local residents was basically that they didn't want " all that noise and traffic" and get this "prostitution and drugs like that track in Richmond has".
Which I can't blame them too much for because I don't like NASCAR weekend traffic either.
so ninja11 your options for track days are autocrosses with either SCCA, NASA, or VMSC at various venues
and whatever HPDE events you can find going on at VIR and Summit Point

I don't know the full story from the developers side but I work with the County often and look at all the development coming through the County. We have just finished building the road past the entrance of which these folks paid a portion to have it constructed to the requirements for traffic generated by a track on the property. The County has still not heard anything on the development since it's approval for rezoning.
I was talking with someone the other day and while it's pure speculation, there is a large amount of housing planned in the development. Perhaps they're waiting for the market to bounce back as this is probably a big funding point for the track?

I was talking with my mother-in-law about this recently (she works for New Kent county) and she said that a lot of the opposition was from the residents at Royal New Kent Golf Course. There's a lot of money in that neighborhood and they didn't want a racetrack "in their backyard". These are the same residents that got 4th of July fireworks at Colonial Downs permanently canceled because it made too much noise.

the track owners should do like Busch Gardens. Kings Mill was in no way going to allow apollos chariot, and they were going to protest(bad word choice) at the board meeting for it. Busch said ok, we wont build it, the HOA didn't go, and Busch applied anyway. If you don't know what happened from there you're stupid.

It's almost within sight of I-64 at exit 220. Take Route 33 toward West Point and take your first right - just after the gas station by the highway - onto route 632. Go about 1.8(?) miles and the proposed track property is on the right.
http://www.get-fast.net/images/dragonsridge.jpg
Unfortunately there are many houses on 632. And road course facilities potentially produce noise 7 days a week...

Maybe they just don't want anything there?
I'm certainly not on the side of the residents/protesters - believe me, if anyone wants a roadcourse this close to home, it's me - however, having been to the proposed DragonsRidge site several times now... it's on a small road in a residential area. There are dozens of houses within earshot of the place. Think about it... you moved out there for the cheap land and peace/tranquility, commuting to work in Richmond or Williamsburg everyday... the last thing you want is "race traffic" on your street, and constant noise.
We all know it would bring plenty of money into that area - put any hotel or gas station near a track and it will always be busy - but I'm guessing that the main problem is people who bought into that area are preaching the NIMBY mentality ("not in my back yard!") :(
At least we've now got this to dream about in the area too:

As much as I hate to say it, there will never be anything built in the SE VA area. Years ago, Paul Sawyer, the previous owner of RIR wanted to relocate the track to the area. He had the land and the money. The local bureaucrats would have had to do very little, yet they couldn't get their heads out if their collective asses long enough to recognize the economic benefits of a track. Thus, he decided to buy out the state fair folks and revamp RIR into what you see today. He since sold RIR and bought the dirt track in Saluda. His family runs that now and has made it one of the best dirt tracks on the east cost if not the country.
As for Dragon's Ridge, while I was autocross chairman for the Old Dominion Region of the SCCA, I was pretty well up on developments at the time. That was probably 5 or 6 years ago at a minimum. The developer was running into every type of opposition you could imagine. With the lack of updates through the web site I can only imagine they have run out of money or options, or both. Shame too, it would have been a great opportunity for the area and us enthusiasts.
As for the Carolina track, the Central Carolina Region SCCA's message board has a thread about what the developer has had to endure. I can see how building a track and trying to get over the hurdles everyone throws at you could really get you down.

To all of those who are interested Dragons Ridge has moved into the final Master plan for Phase 1. It appears it is going to be a Motorsport Country Club focusing on members for the first year at least. Membership plans are now being finalized and the board is curious if the support and interest is there for a track that focuses on members, and as much driving time as they can pay for; as opposed to finding time for members and getting them on track when ever they can.
If there are seriously interested potential members out there please send a note to "dragonsridge1@msn.com" to help get this track going. With any luck tree's will be falling in November.

Hard to say. VIR's membership rates are certainly reasonable (compared to Lime Rock's or even Autobahn's rates anyway.)
The question is... do the members pay a flat rate a year and get "free" track time pretty much anytime they want it (like Autobahn), or do they pay a smaller rate a year and get track time as often as it's scheduled, for an additional fee per day (like VIR.)
Also I'm sure the new facility will be rented by groups who put on track events for non-countryclub members with any make of car, like NASA... hopefully there will be at least a few weekends a season to spare!
Looking forward to the concept of "driving on the track all day, sleeping in my own bed all night" hahahaha,
