View Full Version : A Call To Arms

Hello,
Most of you don't know me, as it has been a long, long time since I've posted on this forum. To start, let me introduce myself, my name is Brendan Meyer, and I have long been involved in the automotive scene, mostly in Northern Virginia. Over the last few months I have, for the most part, removed my self from the scene. The reason for that being that it seems that every time I would come out, someone just had to do a burnout, or race down a busy street, or in some way endanger the right of every other person out there to gather in a peaceful manner, and enjoy this hobby tat greatly engulfs each of our lives. Over the last few days I've been avidly following the recent events at 564 and Kroger, and not only have I been appalled with much of the "coverage" by the news, but I also can't stand to see how everyone on here says that they want the exact same things and can do nothing but argue with each other about how to get it done.
I'm not writing this post to upset anyone, quite the opposite. This situation has been a problem for our kind all around the world, but something can be done to help. Look at the people who go to jenros every Saturday, when was the last time you saw them get kicked out of a lot, get a bad rap with the news, or even get a simple ticket for an exhaust? I know I never have, and I know some of the cars there are about as stock as that ugly eclipse in 2fast2furious. Up in NOVA we had a few spots that we could go to night after night, where we never got hassled. The cops would come to the lot, look at the cars, and we all knew each other by name. The only reason we were able to do this was because we were able to handle ourselves like adults. But you had better believe that the first night some idiot in his civic went screaming down the road next to us and almost hit someone, it was all gone in an instant. The police and the community can accept our presence, we just need to make ourselves presentable, and after the last few days, that’s going to be one hell of a task. If something is going to change, we all have to work together to do it. People who don't want to participate, stop reading now, goodbye, you can live in your world of looking like a "street racer punk" all on your own.
Why I am proposing is a call to arms. I firmly believe that if we can all join together, we can accomplish great things. We don't need to have 300 club Hondas, team racers, etc... I propose to start a joint organization, comprised of all car enthusiasts, all the clubs, and every type of vehicle and their owners within the tidewater area. By showing people that we a solid team of people, we can get recognition. While it may take a while for the media to notice, if we can be recognized by the Car Club Council's of Virginia, that would be a good start. We have all these people around us who have fought this same battle, and whom have been able to help the situation, and themselves. Organizations like RaceLegal.com and R.A.S.R, didn't get noticed by sitting on a website and yelling at each other.
I would like to extend myself to the community, and offer my personal time to start such an alliance. With the support of standing car club councils and flourishing automotive organizations, my goal is to establish the following:
1. Find a place where we can meet, without being harassed by law enforcement, in the evening when we are all out.
2. Organize a number of car show events to be advertised to the general community, be it through the news or handing out flyers, where people can bring their families, have an enjoyable weekend afternoon, and only spend a few dollars to do so, so that money can go to charity.
3. Organize other money raising events such as cruises, car washes, etc...
If we can prove to the community that we are here to stay, and can be a valuable addition to their everyday life, then the media will have to choice but to take notice. It will never be easy, but if we work together, it can be done. All I need is for at least some of you to agree with me, and tell me that you are willing to participate, and I'm on it. My plan is to start a website, which we can use to display our intentions to the community. Through my work, I also have access to quite a few charity organizations, which would definitely be to our advantage to help. I also intend to make sure that we will be recognized by large national and state organizations. All I want is for someone to tell me I'll have the support from you all, without getting bashed for trying to do something. Because if that's all I'm going to get, then it’s not worth your or my time.
I really don’t mean to come across as some dick who just decided to come on here and go on and on, but I really just want to see something good come of this situation. I'm open to any of your ideas, and really would like to hear them. Ideas for a name to the organization would help as well.
Thank You
Brendan Meyer

I appologize for probably being to vague as to my intent for this post. To summarize quickly, I believe that the only way we can help ourselves in this situation, is to join toghether and form a solid organization, that we can present to the media, community and larger automotive organizations, to show that we can enjoy our hobby and hang out, have shows, whatever....without being destructive to the outside world. whatever name we call ourselves, we can use that name to build a new reputation, as one that helps the community, keeps kids off the streets, and can use our passion for cars to better ourselves, and not one that displays us as a bunch of kids who race up and down every road we find. Individuals on this forum can beg and plea for people to listen to us all they want, but unless we have proof that we aren't going to tear up the town, no one will listen. all they will see is this forum with thousands of f*ck you's,F*ck that, F*ck everyones, and to their eyes, absolutely no good coming out of it. hope that was a little better
In the Road rebels thread, someone contaced www.racelegal.com and got a great responce from them. Whatever may or may not get accomplished really should look to do it using the suggestions raceLegal has, they have a tried and true system that has worked in San Diego, so there must be some truth to it.

organization is the key to whatever we decide to do. increasing public insterest (in the good that we do) and enlisting the aid of associations such as RASR and racelegal are crucial objectives if we are going to be sucessful.

it was long...(cliff notes would be kewl ;) haha)
but overall... well written, mature, and sounds like a good plan...
imo i dont think ANYONE can get EVERY car enthusiast in tidewater will comply with these ideas...
BECAUSE
youre pretty much asking everyone to join a massive VA team... and not drive like a ricer...
but gl. and props for the idea:thup:

I believe the Majority of this board is behind you, and if they aren't it would be because they feel the need to be an individual and not part of the team. If that is the case they need to grow up because that attitude would get us nowhere.

Its great to finally see some people supporting a cause. I agree with every point made so far. i think those idiots that are ruining it for everyone can stay an individual, no need for em in the group, they can only bring it down. stickers? why not, once people can associate a good rep with the name. we just have to build the reputation. As far as carrying over the dragva name, as much as I love drag and dont think we should ever leave it, I really think we need to build a completely new community, and put together a decent website for the club where the above idiots cant screw everything up. Something that serves a way for us and the community to keep track of our planned events/charity events etc...

To the thread starter:
I had discussed a similar concept with some people that I no longer keep in close touch with because we have all gone our separate ways in life for the most part. Our inspiration to start this concept was due to street racing deaths that happened in Fairfax at the time in addition to the breakup of the "DragVA Meets" that were held at Fairfax Town Center at the time. However, after the 564 bust one of those people gave me a call because she actually lives in Virginia Beach now. She may be able to help you organize and pursue the effort. I'm sure that she will see this and respond soon enough.
I gave SEMA a call at the end of 2004 about changing the exhaust law in VA to mimic California's 95 dB rule and basically they told me that they don't have the lobbying power in VA to make any advances. The fact that the SEMA sponsored exhaust law got shot down in both 2005 and earlier this year reflects that SEMA still lacks lobbying power in VA. Thus, all the strict car laws that VA is known for probably won't change in the near future.
I think the best bet for a 1/4 mile dragstrip is to revive the dragstrip that used to exist in Suffolk. If memory serves me correctly, I think this dragstrip is now by the intersection of US 13 and VA Route 32 just north of the NC/VA Border. I believe its now possibly part of an airport, but I'm not sure. I think its the best bet because it is still pretty rural out there as the area borders the Dismal Swamp Wildlife Refuge. Has anyone been out there recently to see what its like??

What I imagine would be the best way to get this started would be to have a gathering in a quiet location, where anyone who has ideas on the matter can give their input. Combined, I have to believe we have enough knowledge, and know enough people to get it done. With all of us together, we can hatch out a plan to find areas to go, how to get some car shows going, etc...anybody who's up for a meeting send me a pm. i know im available day and night sun-tues and wed till 5. so just let me know when you guys are available, and I can put somthing together thats good for most of us. also anyone who inst in the area, we can try to find a way to phone confrence or something, because I know this isnt the only area thats having this problem(i.e NOVA!!!)

how bout we carry the dragva name?
I think you want a name that is as far away from straight line racing as possible. To look good in the public/media eye things must be as far away from street racing as possible - there have to be two distinct, and very separate, groups to make this work: car enthusiasts and street racers. If these two cannot be separated, all of the recent efforts here are for nothing.
No offense to DragVa, but the name is tarnished right off the bat with "Drag". Secondly, most of the street races and get togethers for races were organized on these boards.
If we're truly serious about building credibility as car enthusiasts, then people need to start planning a way to separate from the street racing. It also takes time (like years) to get this kind of thing done.
P.S. lLOlRlElN - this post is not aimed at you at all - it is for everyone. I don't think people are thinking about all the difficulties of what is being proposed, and I'm just scratching the surface.
P.P.S. speedfreekgt - good to see you're still around Brendan. Haven't seen you on S2Ki in a while.

No offense to DragVa, but the name is tarnished right off the bat with "Drag"...
Actually, the name implies that we are a group of people that race on the 1/4 mile treack legally...which is also as far from the truth as can be.
But there it is.

Talking with my roommate I want on a rant about how this state doesnt care about the people, its what THEY want and its very one way here.
Here was my example, if there were no gulf courses, VA builds them. How many are there around here. I hell of a lot more people drive cars then gulf.
Also I told him if there wasnt one gulf course I would T up right on 17th street and wack them right down the strip, (kidding but dead serious).
Honestly I'm not a drag person, I like Auto Crossing and Drifting, but this is has nothing to do with what car you drive or what kind of sport you use your car in. This affects all of us as a whole, for once we are all united ford to honda, drag to drift.

The reason for that being that it seems that every time I would come out, someone just had to do a burnout, or race down a busy street, or in some way endanger the right of every other person out there to gather in a peaceful manner. You left out throwing trash every where.
You answered this question with your statement above. It's an older crowd and you don't see any rice.
The only reason we were able to do this was because we were able to handle ourselves like adults. But you had better believe that the first night some idiot in his civic went screaming down the road next to us and almost hit someone, it was all gone in an instant. That is how spots around here start off like too for about a week or two. (the fountains, Circuit city & etc.) Then along comes the "ricer crowd" that want to throw trash all over the parking lot, pull their e brakes up and see how long they can burn some $29.95 Pepboy 12" tires up. Then they ride through neighborhoods right beside the spot rev'n their fart cans and bass'n music at 2AM. Hmmm, I just can't figure out why the community doesn't want us hanging out in their neighborhood?
No matter what you do, this will never work because that one kid ricer will do something stupid that HE thinks makes himself look cool and his car bad ass in their fantasy world that they live in. And you don't know who they are till it's too late. Also it's really hard to keep people out of a public place just because you smell rice on them and they have that I'm going to be "cool" look about them..

Some of that may be true, but I remember when we (lowriders and tuners) used to meet over in newport news at newmarket and then patrick henry the mustang and camaro crowds started coming in, they started doing the burnouts trying to show us what THEY considered real cars, NATURALLY the when the police would come they only saw us, thats how it all started, now dont get me wrong there are tuners out acting just as dumb, but the older crowd is just as much at fault too.I attend DROPJAW MAG.COM WINTER CRUIZE TOURS, they attract 100s of lowriders and tuners who comeout to try to get their rides pics taken to be seen online, usally when the police run us off its because there are so many of us in a lot, not because of thrash or burnouts.

Okay you obvisuosly havent read anything I've posted, I have been dealing with this type of prosecution over my car since most of you were still in diapers, Dee will tell you so herself, She and I have been fight these laws for what seems like forever, this is nothing new. I bet you didnt know the very first year they had the boardwalk show in Va beach the police met me and my club in the registration hotel parking lot and refused to let us in, Dee and the head of the USHRA(they had the monsters on the beach there)threatened to pack up everyone and leave.lowriders tuners, whatever you drive you are a car enthusiast, I see you are online showoff, well so am I, that is an enthusiast site, with lowriders, tuners muscle cars everything just like here. So it effects everyone.

I am fully aware of why the community doesn't want the tuner crowd. I think I just may be smart enough to figure that out. Whether you feel its gonna "work" or not, i really couldnt care less. Atleast these other people and myself are trying to do something to help out people like you, and everyone else on this site. As I said in my original post, if you dont have anything to contribute, see your way out. This thread is not going to turn into some flame fest. and as far as keeping the bad apples out, i dont really have to do a thing. you see the beautiful thing about have the support from law enforcement like we did in nova, is that they would leave us all alone, and if one idiot did something to be "cool", the cops would step in, and fix the problem for us. they'll get rid of the kid doing a burnout, while the rest can sit back and laugh.
we arent going to get this done if everyone keeps bitching about "how long they've been in the scene"and "whos fault it all is". your experience will speak for itself when it all comes down to the line. so lets save the bashing, and get some work done

Okay who would consider this, Dee and I had talked before all of this blew up, about starting a secondary council made up of the tuner and lowrider clubs (enthusiasts), Dee and Harold hartel both attended our club meeting this afternoon and approached us(NEIGHBORHOOD DREAMZ) about it and we all agreed to it, while our meetingwas going on, the newport news police came and abruptly ended our meeting, well after Dee and Mr hartel got finished with him, oh well. Mr hartel got on the phone and asked the chief of police to attend a meeting thursday night at the newport news airport, and he wants some of us to attend, he is going to put it straight to the police, and ask them what is so wrong or illegal about a friendly gathering of enthusiast, who are just parked. So now is your chance to be heard, attend this meeting. for more info, you can contact him at e-mail address hardhar@cox.net or 757-867-6336.

Speaking with her, i am definitely glad to know that we have people with a lot of experience backing us up. Now all we have to do is live up to their expectations. I'm unfortunately working thursday night until 10, and am sad to say I would not be able to attend. I would however like to hold a meeting with the people on this forum to put our minds together and se what we can get started. Being that there aren't too many places we can go without paying an arm and a leg, or getting kicked out that would be quiet enough for such a meeting, I'd be willing to make my house available for the cause. I was thinking this tuesday night around 7-8pm would be open for most people. let me know. anyone who has some ideas is welcome, all I ask is that you come prepared with your thoughts. PM me for directions if you would like to participate or if you have any questions. doughboy, c45p312, being that you guys have already been working on this, I think it would be great if you guys could attend. Well today was a beautiful, we were to meet at taco bell where "Neighborhood Dreamz" has held their meeting for the last few months. I Dee Nienstedt president of Car Club Council of Hampton Roads est 1992 and Hal Hartel president of Va. Penn Car Club Council were there as guest speakers of the club. Talk about a great club. We were peacefully enjoying the meeting and sharing our ideas with the club, thennnn an officer walked in told us we had been there 2 hrs (not true) and were tresspassing!!!!! I went to the officer gave him my name and shook his hand, told him who i was why we were there, he was polite as i was polite, now he knows that there is support for the club, he wished me success and offerd to pass my card on and we left, peacefully!
I must say(giving my age away) its been 40 years since i was run off by the police, lolololol, it still feels the same,,,,,i was frustrated, mad, and my heart went out to the club, again same ol same ol, but not this time. This time you have other car enthuiast ready to help. This will take time, but my council the first of 5 have fought these same battles and won. you can win.

When a spot is found, could we invite/demand the police department have a patrol car out there to ensure that the law is not broken (which would allow us to keep the spot). I know that they had patrol cars at Circuit City and that lasted for awhile, they would shut people down fast. I remember a wrx did a burnout; the cop came right up and stopped him. Wasn’t it trash and noise that got us thrown out of there? Maybe things need to be enforced a little more, and trash receptacles put in place.

this is along the lines of what a teacher of mine said. he knows the police chief here in vb and a manger of a walmart. he wanted to get a lawyer involved and follow all lgeal routes as per requirements. he wants to combine all cars together and have a huge turnout. he was trying to work out something along the lines of having everyone signing a document to follow all traffic laws and if you were caught your membership in the club could/would be revoked as demmed neccesary by a board of adults/leaders in the community. not downing anyone but if you guys want to take this somewhere he is probably one of the best people around who can get it started and maybe last for any amount of time. hit me up if you would like to talk to him because he suggested this to me last week after talking with him about what happened on 564 and the kroger parking lot.

i dont think a mandatory membership is what we are looking for. we just want a place that joe schmoe from buggalo-town, VA can come, enjoy the cars/trucks/bikes/people and have fun without worries. I think he is more talking about doing a car club/members club. I think that is exclusive. I wouldnt mind talking with him though

These are definitely things that need to be discussed tomorrow night. making people a member would make it a lot easier to control the situation, and keep out the idiots. But not everyone will agree to that. We'll be able to discuss all of this tomorrow, and find something we can all agree with. 94sieg, you should make your way out, and if your teacher knows some people, try to get him out too. I know its short notice but we can use all the friends in high places we can get. lemme know, i'll send you a pm just in case

I just got off the phone with the state police, i explained who i was and why i was calling, he was very interested in helping us (CCCHR / VPCCC) work with us. I told him of my incident at taco bell with Neighborhood Dreamz and getting kicked out. And how i explained who and why we were there and we did have permission to be there, but it was a different manager and she didnt know.Sooooooooo here we go,got your backs !!!!! Dee
Thats great. We also need documented proof that we are asking for help. When you all gather tonight, put together a letter to both state and local police ( I know Dee would know what to say) and make sure you keep a copy on file. Just make sure everything is on paper and noted that it is going on file.

Well tonight i responed to a quote that seems to be in the wrong place. and i was bumped, said they appreciated my concern but it would stir up a mess and they had already discussed it. Sorry
Quote " Cops take our cars because they are afraid of them. Right now, they are high performace and low skill. They want these cars off the street before we become high performance and high skilled and they wont catch us"
So i feel the need to put in my 2 cents. To those who agree with that quote let me say this. Do you think for one minute the police are afraid of the cars?
NO, Do you think your cars are the hottest out, i laff at ya, there are high performance cars such as, original shelby cobras(fast),lambo's (superfast),major muscle cars that drive the same streets daily, cars that would blow your doors off. Do they street race, no they dont have to, the car speaks for its self.
These officers stare down the barrels of guns everyday, get shot at and tragiclly some are killed, leaving behind families without a parent, loved ones. They are under-paid, place them selves in the face of danger in order to protect YOU, and me and our communities. They dont want the cars off the street, they want the idiot from behind the wheel. They want us to "arrive alive", ALL of us.
Have i ever street raced sure, 40 years ago, my biggest hurdle, to get the GUYS to let me race. Well i did, took my 65 comet cyclone punched out and showed them a thing or two. did i get caught,,yup! Did i learn my lesson, yup, from that point on i took it to the track.
Please, really listen, help make the changes, be part of something that is getting "big" fast. Saftey and the right attitude will carry you far.
And i stand with you. Dee, Car Club Council of Hampton Roads.

I've been watching these posts for a while. Now, i'm not really into the import scene, but I LOVE to work on, and play with cars. My current project is a 1969 Nova with a 502 and a 200 shot of NOS (just in case). Now, for my point to this post.
Last night, my wife, kids, and myself were our driving down Shore Drive. Some 'ricer' in a white stealth with a cheap folgers (sp?) can exhaust tries to pass us from the shoulder. My wife punches it, and blocks him in the shoulder. Now 5 vehicles ahead of us there is a school bus letting elementary children off. That son of a B*TCH almost hit several of them tring to show off his ricer abilities.
Now if the type of people everyone here talks to and drives with is like that, no wonder why everyone plus cops hate us. Hell, i'd hate us too. There is way to much negative. How about using your cars, to block people like that out. If you see someone being stupid, safely, cut them off. Slow them down. Make them feel stupid. Write down their license plate number, and call it in. Who cares if its called being a snitch. What your really trying to do is weed out the retards who like to put the bad name on the entire scene, and who's doing something about it? I mean for real. All anyone does is tell them to stop. Wow. How about give them a black eye, and tell them to stop after they are in pain? They'll learn. Sorry this post is miles long, its just an idea. So to recap, just do what it takes to stop the idiots who 'think' they are in the scene, and 'think' they are cool, and simply stop them from fu%king up the whole damn scene.

i agree with everything you say except for that. I have witnessed first hand the damage that was caused by a car who "wouldn't let the other one over". the other car decided to try to come over anyway, clipped the rear end of the other vehicle and flipped it completely upside down. If you see someone driving like a jackass, don't try to box them in, don't speed up next to them(potentially encouraging them to go even faster). Just let them over, and get away from them.

point taken.... guess it was the fact he was driving on the shoulder trying to get around a bus letting kids off it. but yeah, you do have a point that i didn't even think about.

I was in my lifted full-size jimmy sitting in traffic on 64 (surprise) nearing an on ramp I let one person with their blinker on merge in and this kid in his riced out civic decided he was coming in whether I wanted him t or not . I have full coverage insurance and no deductible and the right of way so I kept moving forward and so did he eventually he found out my balls were bigger because he got the front corner of my bumper dragged down the side of his car. He then had the nerve to jump out and start cussing me cops showed up and he got a lesson in traffic school because he was ticketed. So I sent the bill from the body shop to his insurance for the replacement of my bumper needless to say one guy may have learned his lesson. As long as you obey the laws you will win
I would still like info on the meetings

thats a valid point, by all means if you have right of way do what you have to do and it sounds like you weren't going very fast. I just think if your going in excess of 55+ and someone wants to do a fly bye like an idiot, just get out of the way.

IT IS A GOOD IDEA BUT IT WONT WORK BECAUSE I TRIED IT. YOU WANT TO MAKE THEM TO UNDERSTAND HOW YOU FEEL THEN FIGHT BACK. THEY DONT LISTEN TO "HI I'M A NICE GUY AND WE JUST WANT TO HANG OUT." FORGET IT BECAUSE IT DOES NOT WORK. JUST LIKE THE BILL IN CALI. THEY ARE TRING TO PASS TO KILL ALL PIT BULLS, IF IT PASSES IT WILL SPREAD ALL THE WAY HER. NO ONE CARES ABOUT WHAT WE WANT THEY JUST WANT TO CONTROL EVERYTHING YOU DO AND MAKE IT BENEFIT THEMSELVES. I HAVE BEEN IN THE RACING SCENE FOR 17 YEARS AND THE ONLY WAY TO WIN IS TO FIGHT BACK.

Well what rock have you been hiding under? Fight back? And pray tell what are your weapons? Enlighten me. First off this is Virginia. Kill all pit bulls, what does that have to do with finding a place to hang? Would you like a list of safe places to hang, im sure the members in dragva can tell you. You have the most negative "tude" i have seen on this forum. And the Hi I am a nice person" WORKS. I have many years behind me, so i know what works, and what dont. So you might want to re-think your approach. Dee

I don't know. I actally said it because of the "Emerald Nuts" comercial. When the girl asks her father if she can have some "Emerald Nuts". He says. If I give you some nuts, Unicorns will die.
