More than a dozen police cruiser lights lit up I-564 Friday night as state and Norfolk police closed in a group of street racers near the Naval base.

Police say young drivers in fast cars had turned I-564 into their motor speedway. Police caught nine high speed street racers in a rolling road block. The drivers stand to loose both their licenses and their cars.

Police have been monitoring the racing for several weeks, clocking drivers traveling in excess of 150 miles per hour, so fast, they couldn't even catch them.

"As soon as they'd come three the terminal, a couple of the cars would slow down and hold traffic back and the other four or five whoever was racing at the time would line up and beep the horn and that was the go signal and they would take off," said State police 1st Sgt. Chris Hawkins.

Drivers caught in the roadblock were charged with organized racing on a public highway. Police confiscated their cars and their passengers were charged with aiding and abetting an organized race.

State police say this parking lot off Little Creek Road served as the spot to congregate. Police charged 17 more drivers here for having illegal equipment on their cars.

Police say they'd rather have to call a parent to pick a child up than have to call a parent to tell them something much worse. "It doesn't take much when you're running side by side with a car and loose control. If you do, especially with the small cars it would just totally demolish those cars and the people in them is not much chance of survival at that speed," Hawkins said.

It will be up to a judge to determine if those involved will loose their cars for good.

Ok, from a guy who got trapped in the lot. All they did to me was take my licence and registration, walk away for a min or so, came back and said have a nice night and to be careful. That was it, no ticket, and that was for the majority of the people in the lot. The story of those busted on 564, from what I heard was this: As soon as some cars lined up, States hit the lights and came at them from head on, in their lane, and they had Officers in the bushes on the side and were in Camo. Those on the Highway lost their cars forever. I suppose they can get them back at auction.

Well the random car would most likely not be a sports car, older driver, in uniform or work clothes and be panicking like "oh my god officer what happened?" dumbstruck look. Not the look all of those lined up most likely had you know the one - hand caught in the cookie jar look. Then they would also be able to vouch they were on there way to or from work. Oh and if there was officers in the bushes they would also know they had just pulled up at the wrong time.... just ideas though.

This story is "Hearsay", it's possible they did launch. As for a "regular person" getting trapped there, it would probably depend on their age and type of car they were driving. Unfortunatly Profiling would take place.

From what I saw (going out there after) at least 8 cars were towed.
For the people who went out there to watch the run, they were obviously "tuner" "rice" cars. No way they could be mistaken for an innocent bistandard. Bull tickets were given out; a passanger got a reckless driving ticket? That probbaly won't hold up in court. They had a state trooper and a Vdot worker blocking off all the roads to that part of the highway.

wow Ive never seen the spectical of tow truck after tow truck towing cars down 564 with chalk on the windows saying "Virginia State Police" . A few of those hatches were kinda nice, I hope they arent gone forever. Just a tidbit, even if your car is seized for racing and you still owe money, the payments must still be made. I feel little simpathy for those who were on 564, its quite obvious drag racing next to a secured military runway weekend after weekend is not going to last. The fact the take down was so swift and organized is almost amazing. I was told one of the Troopers wasn't even familiar with the area, thus he was probably from a whole other district and had to come down to Norfolk solely for this bust. The judge is going to have a field day. I HOPE no one loses their car forever.
