Wow intristing article, but what's really funny is the

"Which vehicle would you have voted the winner of our Cheap Speed, Round 23 comparison test?"

Article (http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=15&article_id=9845)

The Poll (Mid way down on right) (http://www.caranddriver.com/)

I'm not going to say anything except there is alot more Chevy nut hugers reading C/D then i though :D :D :D

How's the title of it going to be 'cheap speed', than the fastest/cheapest car doesn't win. Ah funny the way the world works.

Car and Driver is retarded. I even like the RSX, but to say it's faster and cheaper than a SRT4 is retarded.

For those that dont want to read all 6 pages here is my biased point of view...

Article is called "Cheap Speed, Round 23" And they state this about the SRT-4...
"Not only does its turbo 2.4-liter four produce 230 horses, but it also churns out 107 more pound-feet of torque than the Acura. No surprise, then, that it bagged the quickest 0-to-60 time (5.6 seconds), the quickest and fastest quarter-mile blast (14.3 seconds at 99 mph), the greatest top speed (150), and the most enviable autocross time. The Dodge was the only car in our quintet to score a perfect 20 points in our coveted powertrain performance ranking."

Yet it gets 3rd out of 6...

And then to top it off here is what they say about the 1st place car (RSX-S)...
"Here we go again. That same old comparo conundrum. Our underdog victor offers the worst 0-to-60 time (6.4 seconds), the slowest quarter-mile time (14.9 seconds), the skimpiest back seat, and the most lackluster autocross lap."

Seams like the article and the judging donot fit the title of the article...

It wasn't an all-out performance test.

you'd like to think that this would have a little to do with it though:

Cheap Speed, Round 23

the title of the article itself. I think it's a bullshit article and I don't really like any of those cars in the list so I have no bias.

dave22

All the cars are relatively cheap and relatively quick. They've been doing the Cheap Speed articles for years, and it has never been about speed only. That'd make a pretty boring and predictable read.

It's called "Cheap Speed", not "The Speediest for the Cheapest" :)

Apparently it has very little to do with speed, when the fastest car in every single category finishes in the middle of the pack.

Honda biased? Where did they say the RSX was faster? Is 14.3 still not faster than 14.9?

They gave the Neon a perfect score in powertrain performance. They also commented on its noise and vibration issues and its uncomfortable seats and the fact that it may be a tad too powerful to gracefully get it out of a corner.

The Cheap Speed thing has ALWAYS been about who can squeeze decent performance out of an affordable car without sacraficing other things. Of course the Neon was faster, but the Subaru and the Acura edged it out in other categories. Is this so difficult to understand?

Ever driven both? Can assure you the srt is more than 1/2 a second quicker than a RSX in the 1/4 given equal drivers. Think they gave the srt a bad time/rsx a good time to make the comparison not look as bad. Given most comparo's with the srt's have em right around 13.9(the 05 ACR should be even faster than the 04's, given the better suspension, lighter wheels, and wider tires).
But back on topic. My main problem with C&D is their Honda/BMW bias mostly...but, more so.. If you're going to do a comparison about 'performance' oriented cars, than make the point scale represent that. Interior/lil extra's should be noted, but not worth as many points as performance categories. Course, C&D isn't really directed at performance, as it is cars in general, which is what they have to fall back on.

p.s. A tad bit to powerful coming out of the corner? I guess coming out of the corner slow is more preferable to the guys at C&D.

I don't really think things like refinement and NVH (things both Honda and BMW are VERY good at, while still keeping the driver involved and making the OVERALL driver experience more enjoyable) are "little extras" that should merely be noted. :)

Actually they prefer fast. But tire smoke coming out of a corner is generally bad. A Subaru or Acura hooking up and pulling out of a corner is faster than a Neon spinning the tires while it plows toward the outside wall ;)

According to the AutoX results, the neon's power didnt hinder it at all, seeing as how it came ahead of both the Subaru and the RSX. If it wouldnt hurt it in a low speed situation, where loss of traction due to power is most common (IE autocross), then why would it hurt it in a situation where you're traveling at a higher speed, and your overall torque output due to gearing is lower than what you would see at an autox?

dave22
08-24-2005, 12:05 AM
The autox is where the problem showed itself.

While autocrossing, the Dodge felt right at home but was also the easiest to overdrive, with boost manifesting as early as 2000 rpm. Curb your right-foot enthusiasm, or the SRT4 will smoke its front BFGs out of every corner, even in third gear, plowing wide of your intended line
I'm sure they eventually got used to it since they obviously got comfortable enough to get it around the course faster than all the other cars. But the complaint was still there. That's all I was originally trying to say.

Totmacher
08-24-2005, 11:37 AM
I'll agree on the seats being tight, but you have to give them a few hundred miles to form. I had friends when i first got my SRT that refused to sit in the front seats, but a month later the seats felt 1000x better because they loosened up. In my opinion this is the way it should be. bAck seats in a SRT are garbage, Power windows in the rear pfft I'm not gena go there. loud exhaust? COem on C/D people buying these cars dont care about that 75% will put on a even louder exhaust within the first month. I have arguably the loudest exhaust next to a Dump pipe and it really isnt THAT lound inside.

As for the SRT in corners and how it performs on a oval track.... All I'm going to say is the ONE time me and a few other SRT's went to langley freaky Friday John (Kickercar) finished 2nd behind the 240 (?), the carammo the wrecked finished 3rd (well if you call it a finish) And I finished 4th, I was knocked out by John and I'm sure if he hadnt knocked me out I could have beat the camarro. Also in the time attack I got 6th out of 27 cars and I ONLY did one lap. All this considering none of us had ANY suspension mods and we all had never done that style racing before. So dont doubt the SRT's handaling in corners and such. I think every civic that was there was a well built Turbo/IC'ed one. I was impressed with all the Civics, much better then what you see on the street performance wise anyway.

I agree allin all the Acura-S is a better "overall Everyday drivers" car but lets break down the title "Cheap Speed, Round 23"

Cheep = SRT-4
Speed = SRT-4
Round 23 = assume its the 23rd time they have done this.

I just think the title dosent match the article, I think it was a great article though. BUT the point of my post originally was to show what the readers had voted in comparison to there pics

I dont know if you guys can read and interpret datas. Car magazines have CRITEREAs and these critereas ADD up so they could come up with a winner. You are just biased just because you just bought a car based on the engine and nothing else. Heck, I can buy a V8 or V10 engine and put it in a crappy chassis and call it a day. But that aint a car. A car is a system by it self.

And if you have the IQ to analyze their critereas, then you could then base your purchase on what is important to you. Car magazines are not just about the engine, its not just about 0-60 numbers. Who the heck drives 0-60 in ~4 or ~5 secs every time he/she drives? How often do you drive your car like that in a week? Let alone in a day, every day.

I cant believe how you guys judge a car just by acceleration numbers. Just because an SRT runs faster than say car A - doesnt mean its all superior in all aspects. Theres something called "REFINEMENT"......buying a cheap car doesnt mean you have to buy a spartan car, for some people, they want BALANCE....

Now, go back and do 0-60 in ~5 secs - repeat 100x (tape it and see how stupid you look).

No, not only is it allowed in my home, it is also allowed in my place of business, and anywhere else I feel like exclaiming my dissapointment or anger in a situation.

Sorry I didnt answer your "Q", but I dont feel that my age has much bearing on anything to do with the topic at hand, which is your absurd arguments about my upbringing based on my useage of the word "fuck" or "fucking", or even "shit".

I guess I "losed" this one, much like my "RT" :( You winned.

When and where did I mentioned my ride here? Does it bother you what car or cars I drive?

You didn't mention your ride, but you mentioned this:

I cant believe how you guys judge a car just by acceleration numbers. Just because an SRT runs faster than say car A - doesnt mean its all superior in all aspects. Theres something called "REFINEMENT"......buying a cheap car doesnt mean you have to buy a spartan car, for some people, they want BALANCE....

I figured I'd bold it since you like that.

It seems to me that you think your Audi TT is refined and well balanced.

Someone that treats others the way the would like to be treated and swears, is better than some sniveling little shit talker that speaks like a priest. Wouldn't someone as properly raised as you know the golden rule?

I was raised enough? If I wasnt raised enough, would I not be able to reach something? Is this like a height thing? Did you forget that every post you've made has been an absolute mockery of anything regarding grammar?

You're boring me now.

Yep it is. Buying an overpriced turd and not knowing how to correctly write sentences without sounding like you're an immigrant with english as a third language is not.

Good day to you sir.

Mr. Xcelr8, I wasn't arguing with anyone and I dont know how you people take forum very seriously. It seems like you have your career here. And no, I dont agree that cursing should be acceptable in any way unless you want your life to revolve with F and S words, which I dont. Anyway, time for me to go.

Just one last thing, you obviously are still in high school and never worked in a professional environment so I'll forgive you for your comments, man.

Nope, been out of high school for quite a while now actually. Nice try though. And yes, I've worked in a professional environment before, but I dont now.
